Walk-through of the web server certificate request process
This page is meant to be a guide to the request process. Please read the
instructions on this page, and the pages it links you to, very carefully. If you follow
them exactly we will get you up and running with your secure server in no time at all!
Step 1: Get Your Documentation Together
Before Thawte can issue your server certificate they have to be absolutely certain that
they are issuing it to the correct company. By "correct" they mean that the
company they are certifying owns the Internet Domain Name which they have certified, that
it is registered as a company in one or more countries, and that its registered name is
the same as that on the certificate we are signing.
Obviously, the precise documentation needed varies based on your country and type of
organization. It's most important that you get the documentation that proves your
registration with national or provincial or state authorities, because that is the
documentation that will determine the precise organization name you ask for in the
certificate.
Below is the document required. Click on it for a detailed description of the
requirements and special cases.
Step 2: Generate A Key and Certificate Signing Request (CSR)
The next step in this process is for us to generate your private key and a certificate
signing request (CSR).
It is absolutely essential that the name, state / province and country that we put into
this request are identical to those in your documentation. If your registered
name is "Joseph's Emporium, Inc" don't submit a request for "Joe's
Cafe". This is the reason we must receive your documentation in step 1 before
we can proceed in generating your private key.
Step 3: Submit the CSR to Thawte and get your Request Code
Next we will fill out the form on your behalf which consists of three pages and
contains your CSR (your private key).
When the form is completely processed we will be given a "request code" to
remember. This request code is then entered in the letter of authorization (see below). We
will also use this code to monitor the progress of your application.
The letter of authorization will be generated upon receipt of the request code above.
This letter will then be faxed to you to sign and fax back to us. This letter
states that you have the authority to make the decision and that WEBility can install it
on a server to use on your behalf.
Step 5: Send in the Documentation
Once we receive your letter of authorization we will fax all of you documents to the
representative for processing. That's it! Once we've sent those off to Thawte they
have everything they need to authenticate you and issue a digital certificate. We
should at least see your status change to reflect received docs within a few hours of
faxing them.
Step 6: Installing the Digital ID Certificate
Once we receive the digital certificate we will install it on the server where your
data is stored, and you will be ready to go.
This entire process takes about five working days. If you have any questions
about the documentation you are to provide or the process above please do not hesitate to
contact us at webmaster@webility.com or phone us on 1-800-770-0968.
